Chhattisgarh’s first elevated solar power plant, with a capacity of 200 KW, is being constructed at Maitri Baag, Bhilai, under the joint collaboration of Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) and the Chhattisgarh State Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA). This innovative solar project aims to supply clean energy to the grid-connected solar power plant of SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant, with installation and commissioning work already underway.

One of the unique aspects of this project is its elevated design, allowing the land beneath to be utilized for producing fodder for animals. The electricity generated from this plant will power Maitri Baag and the adjoining Jawahar Udyan, contributing to the area’s energy needs sustainably.

The solar plant is notable for its height, with the front of the structure standing at 3.5 meters and rising to 5.5 meters as it extends backward. Weighing approximately 30 tons, the structure is one of the tallest and heaviest solar installations used for a 200 KW plant, providing both height and stability.

The plant will be equipped with the latest monocrystalline bifacial solar modules by Icon Solar-EN, known for their high efficiency. These modules increase solar energy production while using less space compared to traditional solar setups. The solar plant will span an area of 1,200 square meters (30 x 40 meters), generating around 24,000 units of electricity per month, or 288,000 units annually.

Once operational, the plant will result in financial savings of ₹2,00,000 per month for Maitri Baag. Additionally, it will contribute to environmental sustainability by reducing 250 kg of carbon dioxide emissions per day.
Pawan Kumar, ED (HR), performed the Bhoomi Pujan for the solar power plant’s establishment at Maitri Baag on July 30, 2024, marking the start of this green energy initiative. CREDA will handle the maintenance of the plant for five years following its installation.

This project represents a significant step forward in promoting green energy production in the state. Green energy, sourced from renewable resources, is often referred to as clean, sustainable, or renewable energy due to its minimal impact on the environment. Unlike conventional energy production, green energy generation does not release harmful greenhouse gases, making it an environmentally friendly solution for future energy needs.

The solar power plant at Maitri Baag is not only a step towards a more sustainable future but also a symbol of Chhattisgarh’s commitment to green energy and environmental responsibility.
