Madhya Pradesh’s tourism department is set to enhance its water tourism offerings by inviting bids for a 120 km cruise along the Narmada River, linking two iconic sites: the Statue of Oneness in Omkareshwar and the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Gujarat. The ambitious project will span across the states, offering tourists a serene journey along the river while showcasing the region’s cultural and natural beauty.
As part of its push to elevate water-based tourism, the Madhya Pradesh government has issued an expression of interest (EOI), inviting private operators to manage the proposed river cruise. The cruise will offer a one-of-a-kind experience, blending water travel with local sightseeing, with multiple stops along the way. “This project is aimed at creating a memorable experience for tourists and promoting inter-state tourism between Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat,” said an official from the tourism department.
The planned cruise route will feature four river terminals, two located in Madhya Pradesh at Kukshi and Sakarja in Alirajpur district, and two in Gujarat at Hanfeshwar and Mokhadi. While a significant portion of the journey will take place on the river, travelers will also experience short road journeys to fully explore the surrounding regions.
This initiative is just one part of Madhya Pradesh’s larger vision for water tourism. By 2025, the state aims to enhance water-based recreational activities, including boat clubs and adventure sports, across numerous water bodies. Already, 22 lakes, reservoirs, and rivers have been earmarked for tourism development, and new boat clubs, like the recently opened Sarsi Island Club, are further boosting the state’s reputation as a water adventure destination.
Additionally, the state is working to transform areas like Gambhir Dam into weekend getaways, offering water sports, boating, and family-friendly activities. These efforts are all part of Madhya Pradesh‘s mission to create new opportunities in tourism while preserving its natural beauty.
The Narmada River cruise, once launched, is expected to bring a significant boost to tourism and generate economic opportunities in both Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. With this inter-state collaboration, the two states are set to draw more visitors, eager to explore their shared history and scenic river landscapes.
