Panna district in Madhya Pradesh, long known for its rich diamond mines, has achieved a major
milestone with its famed diamonds receiving the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
This recognition places Panna’s gemstones on the global map, reinforcing their authenticity and
strengthening their market value. With the GI status, the diamonds from this region are expected
to gain increased visibility and credibility in international trade.
Officials believe the GI tag will significantly boost demand, as buyers across the world will now
associate Panna diamonds with verified origin and quality. The achievement was made possible
through collaboration between the district administration, the state mining department, and
dedicated efforts from organisations that worked on the technical and documentation aspects of
the GI application. Their collective contribution has paved the way for Panna’s gems to shine
brighter in global markets.
The Human Welfare Society played a crucial role by submitting the GI application in June 2023 to
a Chennai-based institute responsible for evaluating and approving such tags under the Union
Commerce and Industry Ministry. After thorough scrutiny, Panna’s long-standing reputation as a
diamond-rich region earned it official recognition. This step marks a significant boost for local
miners and the regional economy.
Often referred to as the “Diamond City,” Panna is known for producing gems with a light green
hue and distinct carbon lines—unique features that contribute to their identity. With the GI tag
now secured, these diamonds are expected to attract more attention, encourage fair pricing, and
enhance the pride of the region that has been home to these natural treasures for generations.
