Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced a comprehensive plan to significantly expand air connectivity across the state, aiming to bring both rural and urban regions into the aviation network.
According to the Chief Minister, the state government is working on developing one airport every 150 kilometers and one airstrip every 75 kilometers. This initiative is expected to cover vast rural stretches of the state, ensuring better accessibility for remote areas. “This will connect not only urban centers but also rural and remote regions to the aircraft. Three new airports – Rewa, Datia, and Satna – have been made operational in the past one year,” CM Yadav stated.
Following the successful launch of these airports, the state government has accelerated its efforts on the newly approved airports in Shivpuri and Ujjain districts. Land acquisition for these projects is already underway.
At present, Madhya Pradesh has eight airports, with six operational, including those in Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur, and Khajuraho. To further boost aviation, the state has introduced the New Civil Aviation Policy 2025, which aims to position Madhya Pradesh as a regional aviation hub. The policy envisions linking every district with national and international air traffic while developing airports, airstrips, and helipads across all districts.
The state government has also prioritized enhancing cargo facilities, which will play a critical role in strengthening Madhya Pradesh’s agricultural and industrial sectors. Improved cargo connectivity is expected to fuel socio-economic growth, boost tourism, and enhance medical and emergency services.
As per official data, Madhya Pradesh witnessed 5.6 million air passengers in the financial year 2023-24. The government projects this number to rise to 25 million by March 31, 2025. Currently, the state’s share in India’s total air traffic stands at 1.45 per cent, with an ambitious target to increase it to 5 per cent.
With its multi-pronged approach, Madhya Pradesh is not only strengthening infrastructure but also laying the foundation for inclusive growth by ensuring aviation benefits extend beyond cities into rural and remote landscapes.
