Madhya Pradesh is adding a new dimension to its tourism landscape with an initiative aimed at developing Astro-Tourism across the state. The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board is working to transform naturally dark, low-light-pollution locations into dedicated destinations where visitors can explore the night sky while experiencing the surrounding rural environment. As part of the first phase, six villages have been selected across Dhar, Chhindwara, Betul, Narmadapuram, Damoh and Umaria districts.
The selected locations include Gyanpura in Dhar, Dhusawani in Chhindwara, Banja in Betul, Dhaba in Narmadapuram, Richhkudi in Damoh and Rancha in Umaria. Development work has already started in these villages, with the project focusing on creating an experience that combines astronomy, nature and rural tourism. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe stars, planets and the Milky Way in relatively undisturbed night-sky conditions, offering an alternative to conventional sightseeing.
To support this experience, the villages will be equipped with modern astronomy and tourism facilities. These are expected to include telescopes, binoculars and astrophotography cameras, along with dedicated star-gazing platforms and observation areas. Interpretation centres will also help visitors understand constellations, celestial events and other astronomical concepts, making the experience informative as well as recreational.
The project places considerable emphasis on creating opportunities for local communities. Young people from the selected villages will receive 90 days of specialised training covering the night sky, constellations and astronomical phenomena. After completing the programme, they can work as trained Astro Guides, creating new avenues for employment and self-employment while allowing local residents to play an active role in the tourism ecosystem.
Beyond astronomy, the initiative could help strengthen the tourism potential of rural areas that may otherwise remain outside mainstream travel circuits. Visitors seeking peaceful destinations, photography experiences, educational activities or opportunities to connect with nature could find these Astro Villages particularly appealing. The combination of dark skies, village surroundings and astronomy-based activities can provide travellers with an experience that differs from traditional tourism offerings.
With the development of these six destinations, Madhya Pradesh is seeking to establish a stronger presence in India’s growing Astro-Tourism sector. By connecting scientific exploration with natural landscapes and community participation, the initiative has the potential to create new tourism experiences while supporting rural livelihoods. If successfully developed, these Astro Villages could become distinctive destinations where travellers can discover Madhya Pradesh not just by day, but also through the skies above it.
