A Madhya Pradesh-based company has made a significant move in Uttar Pradesh’s burgeoning liquor industry by establishing a new brewery in the Hasanganj locality of Unnao. With an annual production capacity of 10 crore litres, this brewery is set to be one of the largest in the state and the first of its kind in central UP. It surpasses the capacity of another nearby brewery in Unnao, which produces 7 crore litres of beer annually, marking a key milestone in central UP’s growing beer production sector.
Previously, the majority of beer production in the state was concentrated in western UP. However, with the state’s liquor industry expanding and attracting investment from companies across the country, including this Madhya Pradesh-based firm, the trend is shifting. The state’s excise commissioner, Adarsh Singh, noted that the brewery will provide numerous job opportunities for the local population, bolster the state’s revenue, and offer consumers a wider range of beer choices.
The growing liquor market in UP has drawn attention from established players nationwide. Since April 1, three new distilleries have been set up in addition to the Unnao brewery. Existing distilleries are also expanding their capacities to capture a larger market share. Five distilleries have already received government approval to increase production, while three others have applied for permission to begin producing industrial alcohol (extra neutral alcohol).
UP’s excise revenue has been consistently rising, with a 12% increase reported in the first seven months of the current financial year (April 1 to October 31). This consistent growth in revenue has been a major draw for liquor companies, leading to more investments and new production units in the state. The new Unnao brewery exemplifies this trend, boosting the state’s economy and solidifying UP’s role as a key player in India’s liquor industry.
