The Centre awarded Indore as the cleanest city in the nation on Thursday at the Swachh Survekshan Awards. Housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri in a virtual event congratulated Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan as well as civic authorities of Indore. Indore has won the cleanest city award for the fourth consecutive time.

While Indore maintained its winning streak, second and third positions were secured by Surat in Gujarat and Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra, respectively, in the category of ‘More than 1 lakh population’. Among cities with less than one lakh population, Karad in Maharashtra held its position as the cleanest city.

Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, has been adjudged the ‘Cleanest Ganga town’ while New Delhi (Union Territory of New Delhi) and the NDMC have been awarded ‘Cleanest Capital City). Jalandhar Cantt came first as India’s ‘Cleanest Cantonment’.

Cleanest State ( More than 100 cities) was awarded to Chhattisgarh, second time in a row while in ‘less than 100 cities’ category, first position was secured by Jharkhand.

Bhopal came first in ‘Fastest moving self-sustainable cleanest capital city’ category while Madhya Pradesh won overall in the category of ‘Best performing state with less than 100 cities’ and third in ‘Cleanest state’ after Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.

The Swachh Survekshan 2020 is the fifth edition of the survey that was introduced by PM Narendra Modi in January 2016. The survey is an annual nationwide cleanliness ranking exercise conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. This year’s survey covered areas under 4,242 urban local bodies, 64,315 wards, along with online feedback received from 1.8 crore citizens, in a record 28 days.
