State-owned Hindustan Copper Limited is moving ahead with a major expansion plan aimed at strengthening India’s domestic copper production. The company is set to award a work order worth around ₹470 crore for setting up a new copper concentrate plant in Madhya Pradesh. This project reflects a strategic push to increase capacity and reduce dependence on imports as demand for copper continues to rise across key industries.
The upcoming plant will have a capacity of 3 million tonnes per annum and will be developed at the Malanjkhand Copper Project. To execute this, Hindustan Copper’s board has approved a turnkey contract to Ardee Engineering Limited, which will handle the entire process from design to commissioning. This approach ensures streamlined execution and timely completion of the project.
According to company disclosures, the total project cost is estimated at approximately ₹469.55 crore, excluding GST. The construction and operational rollout are expected to be completed within a period of 27 months. The approval for this initiative was granted during the company’s 461st board meeting held in March 2026, aligning with regulatory requirements.
This expansion comes at a time when copper demand is witnessing steady growth, especially due to sectors like electric vehicles, renewable energy, and infrastructure development. By increasing its production capacity, Hindustan Copper aims to strengthen its market position while contributing to India’s goal of self-reliance in critical minerals.
