Heidelberg Cement India has strengthened its long-term raw material strategy by securing mining rights for the Sakhla-Satpara Limestone Block in Madhya Pradesh. The company has entered into a 50-year Mine Development and Production Agreement (MDPA) with the Department of Mineral Resources, Government of Madhya Pradesh, giving it access to an estimated 63 million tonnes of limestone reserves.
The limestone block is spread across approximately 216 hectares in Damoh district. The agreement marks an important development for Heidelberg Cement India as limestone is a critical raw material in cement manufacturing. Having a secured source of limestone over several decades can help the company improve the predictability of its raw material supply and support its future production plans.
The block had previously been secured through an auction in 2023, and the latest agreement formalizes the company’s long-term mining and production rights. With an estimated 63 million tonnes of limestone available, the resource has the potential to support HeidelbergCement India’s operations in Central India for an extended period.
For cement manufacturers, access to reliable limestone reserves is particularly important because fluctuations in raw material availability, transportation expenses and market prices can affect production economics. By securing its own captive resource, Heidelberg Cement India can reduce some of these supply-related uncertainties while strengthening its control over a key input.
The agreement also fits into the broader expansion and resource-planning requirements of the cement industry. As infrastructure, housing and construction activity continue to generate demand for cement, companies are increasingly focused not only on production capacity but also on securing the raw materials needed to maintain that capacity over the long term.
From a regional perspective, the development could further support Heidelberg Cement India’s operations across Central India. A captive limestone source can provide greater operational flexibility and help the company plan production and logistics with a longer-term outlook.
Overall, the 50-year agreement represents more than just access to a mineral resource. It gives Heidelberg Cement India greater visibility over one of the most important inputs in cement manufacturing and provides a foundation for long-term resource planning, operational stability and future production growth.
