India’s expanding high-speed rail network has added a significant milestone with the launch of
the Vande Bharat Express between Banaras and Khajuraho. Flagged off by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi, this new service is part of a broader initiative to strengthen rail connectivity
across several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi, Kerala, and
Karnataka. Among the newly introduced trains, the Banaras–Khajuraho route stands out as a
culturally rich corridor that links the spiritual vibrancy of Varanasi with the world-renowned
heritage architecture of Khajuraho. The train is expected to become a vital link for pilgrims,
tourists, and local travellers who move frequently between these two regions.
Running from Banaras in Uttar Pradesh to Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh, the route passes
through several key junctions such as Mirzapur, Prayagraj, Banda, and Mahoba before entering
the Chhatarpur region. This path naturally connects major spiritual and cultural destinations like
Chitrakoot and Prayagraj, making the train an attractive option for heritage tourism. Regular
services are set to begin soon after the inaugural run, and passengers will be able to choose
between AC Chair Car and Executive Chair Car, both equipped with modern comforts like
ergonomic seating, infotainment screens, Wi-Fi, automatic doors, and onboard catering.
Although the official fares have not yet been declared, they are expected to align with other
short-distance Vande Bharat services, maintaining a balance between comfort and affordability.
The importance of this route extends beyond travel convenience. The new Vande Bharat service
drastically reduces journey time from the usual 10–12 hours on conventional trains to
approximately 6–7 hours, making it a much faster and more efficient option. This improved speed
and comfort will significantly boost the movement of tourists to the UNESCO World Heritage Site
of Khajuraho while also encouraging inter-state travel for religious purposes, trade, and
business. The train’s advanced aerodynamic design and upgraded traction technology promise a
smoother ride, reduced noise, and enhanced safety, contributing to a more premium travel
experience.
Overall, the Banaras–Khajuraho Vande Bharat Express is more than just a new train—it is a
strategic step towards boosting regional development, enhancing tourism, and improving
mobility across central India. By connecting two iconic destinations and several growing towns
along the way, the service is poised to open new economic opportunities and strengthen cultural
exchange between Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.
