For the first time in history, India will host the prestigious World Rose Convention, with the 21st edition of the global horticultural event scheduled to take place in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, in 2028. The announcement was officially made at the 20th World Rose Convention held in Fukuyama, Japan, where the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS) handed over the ceremonial flag to Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board (MPTB), marking India’s upcoming role as host nation.
The global event, held every three years, unites rose lovers, horticulturists, researchers, and floriculture experts from around the world. The 2028 convention in Bhopal is expected to attract more than 700 delegates from various countries, making it a significant milestone for India in the global floriculture and tourism sectors.
Madhya Pradesh’s rich cultural landscape, lush gardens, and scenic lakefronts will provide the perfect setting for the week-long celebration of roses. The event will feature thematic rose gardens, technical sessions, cultural performances, and tourism showcases highlighting the diversity and beauty of the state.
Leading the Indian delegation in Japan, Sheo Shekhar Shukla, Principal Secretary of Tourism, Culture, and Religious Trusts & Endowments Department, and Managing Director of MPTB, expressed pride and enthusiasm. “It is a matter of immense pride for us to be given the honour of hosting the 21st World Rose Convention in the heart of India—Incredible Madhya Pradesh. The state is globally recognised for its rich cultural heritage, monuments, and natural beauty,” he said.
Adding to the momentous occasion, Sushil Prakash was elected as the new President of the World Federation of Rose Societies, becoming the first Indian to hold this prestigious position. His appointment further underscores India’s growing prominence in the global horticultural landscape.
At the 20th convention in Japan, Madhya Pradesh showcased its cultural vibrancy through lectures, exhibitions, and workshops. The state’s participation not only drew international attention but also laid the groundwork for promoting sustainable tourism and biodiversity at the upcoming 2028 event.
With Bhopal gearing up to host this landmark event, the 21st World Rose Convention promises to be a spectacular convergence of global horticultural expertise, cultural exchange, and tourism promotion—right at the heart of India.
