Bhopal, June 15 (IANS) — In an effort to improve visitor experiences while following to environmental standards, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation has introduced’shikara’ boat excursions on the city’s famed Upper Lake. This proposal comes months after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned motorized boats and cruises on the lake owing to environmental infractions.
The Upper Lake, also known as ‘Bada Talab’, is a popular tourist destination in Madhya Pradesh‘s capital. It is situated opposite the gorgeous Shyamla Hills. Shikara boats, a traditional form of rowing watercraft, have long been associated with the peaceful waters of Srinagar’s Dal Lake. Bhopal now hopes to recreate this calm experience in its own urban context.
The introduction of Shikara boat trips is presently a trial initiative, with only one boat in service. “Shikara boats are primarily designed for still or standing water bodies,” stated Bhopal Mayor Malti Rai. “Given the currents in Bada Talab, we’re starting slowly with one boat to gauge its success. If the pilot proves successful, we intend to introduce more shikara boats as a sustainable alternative to powered tours.”
The necessity for an environmentally friendly choice came following the NGT’s verdict in September, which prohibited the state’s Tourist Department from running a little boat in the Upper Lake with a music system and diner. The tribunal’s ruling was based on the cruise’s violations of many environmental standards.
Tourists and residents alike have embraced the new project, praising the civic body’s efforts to maintain the lake’s natural beauty while also providing recreational options. As the pilot project continues, Bhopal officials are confident that shikara boat tours would become a popular attraction, combining environmental awareness with cultural legacy.
The pilot shikara boat is already creating waves, providing a new and relaxing way to explore the enormous length of Bhopal‘s famed Bada Talab. This program not only aims to enhance tourism, but it also demonstrates the city’s dedication to sustainable growth.
